Accurate Gluten Free Blood Tests?

I was just wanting to know how accurate gluten free blood tests are?

I have been trialling a gluten free diet for 6 months now and I have decided it is time to get tested?

I get really bad eczema and gas when I eat gluten, I also find that it makes my brain very cloudy and I can not think straight.

Do I need to start eating gluten again to get accurate results about my allergies? Or am I better to stay off gluten? Will this mean my results are less clear because I do not have gluten in my system?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Blood Tests - Not Accurate
by: Anonymous

My mother has coeliacs and she was blood tested then had an endoscopy and both results were inconclusive. The doctor said it was because she'd started a gluten free diet. Yes you have to go back on gluten and back to the pain to try and get an accurate result. I've had a blood test and it came back negative. Its not worth the pain to get it "confirmed" when I know what it is and that the diet works.

Blood test are not conclusive

I too am in your predicament I beleive blood tests are not always conclusive and you must eat a gluton diet before you do the blood test The only accurate test is a biopsy of the small intestine to see if the 'villi' are damaged. This test is a day in hospital and I personally do not think it is worth the agony of eating gluton and going back to haveing uncomfortable, (to say the least) symptoms until the tests. My decision is to stick with the GF diet if it is working and forget the tests.

Not accurate

I've just read a book called "The Gluten Connection" by Shari Lieberman, that states that 'blood tests show only full-blown celiac disease, they do not show gluten sensitivity'. A person can still have reactions to gluten but not have celiac disease. Even though a doctor may state that its safe to eat anything if the test comes back negative, this may not be the case. The medical profession doesn't recognise gluten sensitivity, which may still cause headaches, bowel problems etc. The book is really worth a read. I found it in my local library. It was published in 2007.
