If you are new to being gluten free… Or just enjoy ticking off a good to do list I have devised this gluten free checklist to avoid hangriness and gluten poisoning on your trip.
If your not familiar with the term hangry it’s a combination of hungry and angry an pretty much sums me up when I am overtired and hungry.
There is nothing worse than getting glutened at the airport or on a long haul flight – after all who wants to have gastro issues when you are in confined spaces for several hours.
The options at an airport are slowly becoming better, but I have been caught out before, so always like to have at least something gluten free to snack on while I wait for flights.
When it comes to gluten free travel here are my 11 travel tips to keep you feeling fab on arrival.
- Research your airlines – See if they have a gluten free option or if there is a meal on that flight. This saves you spending money on expensive airport meals.
- Book a gluten free special meal when you book your flights.
- Three days before you fly ring the airline to confirm your gluten free meal.
- If you are travelling to a country that speaks another language print out some allergy cards, cut them up and puy them in your wallet and handbag. You want to print a few so that you can give them to the waiter or waitress ( who may give them to the chef) these are a real life aver when travelling in another language.
- Research your destination – I know from personal experience that sourcing gluten Free in. New country can be hard after a log haul flight, taking a few bits and pieces for energy can help you replenish your energy so you can start your trip vibrant and clear headed.
- Before you arrival at the airport pack a gluten free snack like a bag of nuts or raw balls, avoid salty chips.
- When you check in verify your gluten free meal.
- On your flight Rehydrate and avoid sodas and alcohol as they can dehydrate and leave your skin looking dry at the end of the flight.
- Discard any open food fruits or fresh items on the plane (there is worse then getting a fine for smuggling in band food products – so better to ditch them.
- Be sure to declare any gluten free products you have in your luggage.
- Once you arrive buy some snacks to keep in your handbag. ( When travelling in Cuba I found a bowl of bread always came out 30 minutes before the food – having a snake on Hand means u can avoid food envy and generally hangry behavior ( and in my case it made life much easier for travel companions )
