Travelling Gluten Free (1)If you are new to being gluten free… Or just enjoy ticking off a good to do list I have devised this gluten free checklist to avoid hangriness and gluten poisoning on your trip.

If your not familiar with the term hangry it’s a combination of hungry and angry an pretty much sums me up when I am overtired and hungry.

There is nothing worse than getting glutened at the airport or on a long haul flight – after all who wants to have gastro issues when you are in confined spaces for several hours.

The options at an airport are slowly becoming better, but I have been caught out before, so always like to have at least something gluten free to snack on while I wait for flights.aircraft-479772_1280

When it comes to gluten free travel here are my 11 travel tips to keep you feeling fab on arrival.

  1. Research your airlines – See if they have a gluten free option or if there is a meal on that flight. This saves you spending money on expensive airport meals.
  2. Book a gluten free special meal when you book your flights.
  3. Three days before you fly ring the airline to confirm your gluten free meal.
  4. If you are travelling to a country that speaks another language print out some allergy cards, cut them up and puy them in your wallet and handbag. You want to print a few so that you can give them to the waiter or waitress ( who may give them to the chef) these are a real life aver when travelling in another language.
  5. Research your destination – I know from personal experience that sourcing gluten Free in. New country can be hard after a log haul flight, taking a few bits and pieces for energy can help you replenish your energy so you can start your trip vibrant and clear headed.
  6. Before you arrival at the airport pack a gluten free snack like a bag of nuts or raw balls, avoid salty chips.
  7. When you check in verify your gluten free meal.
  8. On your flight Rehydrate and avoid sodas and alcohol as they can dehydrate and leave your skin looking dry at the end of the flight.
  9. Discard any open food fruits or fresh items on the plane (there is worse then getting a fine for smuggling in band food products – so better to ditch them.
  10. Be sure to declare any gluten free products you have in your luggage.
  11. Once you arrive buy some snacks to keep in your handbag. ( When travelling in Cuba I found a bowl of bread always came out 30 minutes before the food – having a snake on Hand means u can avoid food envy and generally hangry behavior ( and in my case it made life much easier for travel companions )
