Is Maltodextrin Gluten Free?

by GFA

This is a good question. Although Maltodextrin is not made from malt or barley it may or may not be gluten free.

It is all dependent on the starch it was made from
e.g maize, corn, tapioca, rice, wheat etc.

Its origin is usually dependent on the country the maltodextrin was made in (sadly this is not required to be stated on packaging).

Watch out for this product as it may be the hidden ingredient that is causing you a reaction.

maltodextrin is gluten free under Australian labeling laws if it is shows the word maltodextrin only , indicating that it is from a source other than an allergen . If there is an allergen present it by law is to indicate this ie: maltodextrin (wheat).Where an ingredient shows no allergen (unidentified it is perceived as a source other than ie:(tapioca , maize etc).
one exception being glucose syrup / glucose (wheat ) which is declared as safe through the way it is cooked removes gluten .Safe for coeliacs no wheat intolerance .
