Are Dairy Products Gluten Free? And Which Dairy Products Contain Gluten?
So you give up gluten… then the questions arise:
- Are dairy products gluten free?
- Is there gluten In cheese?
- Does It make a difference if its in its natural form or processed?
After giving up gluten along with any other allergies – some people are mortified at the idea of giving up dairy as well. While I know a number of people who also have a dairy allergy – those who do not can find a number of dairy products which are free of gluten.
Processed Vs. Natural.
Processed dairy products do have a higher likelihood of containing gluten. This is because wheat products can often be used to thicken or bulk out the product.
Cheeses to be weary of:
blue cheese can contain gluten, this is because bread is sometimes placed around the cheese blocks to form veins. This is not always the case – as some creameries use grapes instead of bread to achieve this.
Shredded Cheese:
Some US companies use flour to stop shredded cheese from sticking in the pack.
Other Products:
Milk seems to be fine – but flavored milks could contain thickeners – caramel colors or maltodextrin so read the packet. – also watch out for thick shakes – unless you read the label on the thickener.
So really it depends on the supplier and the processed they use to make the dairy products. I always read labels – and when in doubt i ring the free phone line of the company to verify!
